MG Car Repair: speed-& odometer, mg midget, speedometer

My '78 California equiped MG Midget's speedometer is not working and the suggestion of a mechanic who is working on it is that the problem is the interval box and not the cables.  Since the car is no longer in CA and in fact is now in Canada, is it possible to bypass the 'box' with a single cable that can be purchased and is valid in other jurisdictions other than California.

Hi Ted,
If Canada does not require the box, you should be able to install the older cable which I believe had the correct ends on it. However, most of the boxes froze up that I worked on and that broke either the lower cable of the 90 degree drive on the trans. So you should check them too.
