MG Car Repair: 73 MGB no key, bolt head, box key

Question
I acquired a 73 MGB (long story) and had it brought to my house on a flat bed. There is no key. What is the best way to resolve this? Someone suggested using the glove box lock to have a new one made. Is this a good idea?

Answer
Hi Meg,
As I remember the glove box key is not the ignition key on a 73 "B", so it will be necessary to remove the steering lock assembly and take it to a locksmith. It is held in by two "shear off" bolts. They can be unscrewed with a small chisel and a hammer working on the edge of the head of the bolts. The factory suggests to drill and use an "Easy out" But in the dealership we found it much easier to just chisel on the edge of the recessed bolt head left after the shear off hex was broken off by the installers. Most locksmiths can then make a key for it.
