MG Car Repair: MG Midget no turn signals or hazard, turn signal switch, mg experience

Question
Hi- I have 1979 Midget with no working turn signals or hazards. This is my first Mg experience and I'd hate to just keep buying parts until it's fixed. I've heard it could be a turn signal switch but I've got horn and high beams...I also heard it could be a flasher.. or a hazard switch. Any ideas??

Thanks!!!
Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,
First thing is to get a service manual with a wiring diagram in it. You are correct not to spend any money on parts until you do some testing. The most common fault with turn signals is the flasher unit. The flasher unit works on resistance so to test it you should be sure it is powered and connect a bulb to it to test it. Even though one bulb will make it flash at a different speed it is still a good test. With a wiring diagram you can tell which wire to check for power and which to connect the bulb to. Let me know when you have your diagram and I will walk you through the tests.
