MG Car Repair: Speedometer Cable, speedometer cable, knurled nut

Question
Hi Howard,

I am having a lot of dificulty with my speedometer. I have replaced the cable and 90 degree gearbox. The gearbox input shaft broke. I think the problem may be in the attachment of the 90 degree box to the transmision. Should I tighten the knurled nut all of the way until it stops? The catalog says there should be roation of the cable side.Any special tips on this?

Answer
Hi Allen,
Yes, the knurled nut should be tight. However you should check the dept of the hole that the short piece of cable or pin goes into and measure so that the pin does not bottom out when the nut is tightened. Most that I found that brakes the short pin of brakes cables it is a speedo head locking up or a kinked cable.
