MG Car Repair: mg carb, shock absorber, hydraulic resistance

Question
I`ve just bought a 1976 midgit and was wanting to know what kind and how much oil go`es in the top of the carb.?I had problem`s with the needle and cleaned it so the gas would stay in the bowl but now the car won`t run because of no fuel to the cyl.Did i hurt the carb by turnin it upside down?

Answer
Hi Billy,
No you can't hurt the carb by turning it upside down. It only takes a couple of teaspoons of oil. The standard method to check the level is to un screw the cap and lift it up and push it back down, if you feel hydraulic resistance, it has enough. It is just a shock absorber for the piston.
You said you cleaned the "needle". Which needle? the "needle and seat" in the float chamber? or the long needle on the bottom of the piston? If it was the long needle on the bottom of the piston, did you look at the diaphragm for holes? and did you get the "tooth" in the outer rim of the diaphragm into it's grove?
If you were talking about the needle & seat in the float chamber, did you check and reset the float level?
