Military Vehicle Repair: Starter bracket- CHECK END OF PAGE ADDED SOME STUFF, pitman arm, gm dealer

Question
Ron,where is the NSN taag on my truck? Is it inside the driver side door? Where can I get one of the "new" starters that isnt as big and bulky.Do I have to change the truck over to 12 volts to do so? My truck also will have a clicking or a banging noise coming from the rear end once in a while. I know the locker is disengaging and engaging. Is there an additive I can put in the rear end to make it stop doing this? I changed the fluid and it does it a lot less, maybe once a week after turning. Sorry I forgot to tell you what I was driving before,I let my fingers get ahead of my brain. Thank you in advance.

Question -
I was told by the gentleman that rebuilt my starter that their is supposed to be a bracket on the front of the starter that bolts to the frame somehow to help support the starter. Is this true? I cant seem to find the listing anywhere? My father works at a GM dealer and none of the mechanics there have heard of such a thing. Also I have 36 inch tires on my truck with no lift and they only rub on the pitman arm when turning hard left. Plans were to lift it 6 inches but I was told by a spring shop that they could not get springs for my truck, they were too long. Is the spring pack different than a regular 1 ton truck? Also what gears are in my truck? I was told they make two versions. Youre supposed to be able to drive the higher geared one 60-65 mph. I couldnt until I put the big tires on it.

1st of all it would be nice to know what you have. If the starter is the original starter, big, heavy and bulky yes there is a support bracket for the front of the starter. if it is the new starter, much smaller, lighter then the support bracket will not fit the new type starter. There is no replacement for the bracket. By the way you  explained ,you have a pickup truck. There were 2 differant gear ratios on the pickup. If there is still an NSN on then data tag, send it to me i will find out what you have. The pickups were 1 and a 1/4 ton. Heavy duty. The M1008 revs high at  45 to 55 at the max with high rev, any other ones good to go.the 1008 was built for off road only, but we have a couple and drive them on the interstate at 65-70, just have to replace the  rear main seal more often. any more info needed call me on my cell at 765-437-6900, i can explain a whole lot more . thanks and good luck

Answer
The NSN should be on the metal tag on the drivers door or drivers pillar(were the door latch latches to the stud when shut)It might not be there. The new type starters are the only ones that we get anymore. I will have to get you the part number for it, I know it is a prestolite starter. You dont have to change to 12 volts, they are also 24 volt. The trucks do have posi trac rearends, and there is an additive for them. Its kinda expensive but you should be able to pick it up at your local autoparts store, or a dealer ship.No problem. Glad to be able to help out. Any more questions let me know, I will find out what the starter #is and let you know.********* HERE IS WHAT i HAVE COME UP WITH HOPE IT HELPS. SORRY FOR THE CAPS BUT WANTED TO MAKE SURE YOU REGOGNIZE THE FOLLOWUP. THE STARTER BRACKET MAY STILL BE AVAILABLE THROUGH A GM DEALER.HERE IS THE GM PART NUMBER FOR IT 14028931. THE OLDER TYPE STARTERS ARE A BETTER QUALITY THAN THE NEW DESIGN. IF YOU BUY A NEW DESIGN STARTER MAKE SURE THERE IS A WARRANTY WITH IT, I THINK I HAVE REPLACED ABOUT 3 OF THEM ON ONE TRUCK IN A YEARS TIME.HERE IS THE INFORMATION ON THE NEW STARTER.
