amber light with an oil lamp with a line underneath came on and then suddenly the engine cut out

That light indicates low oil pressure.  There pressure can be low due to low quantity of oil or lack of flow.  If the engine has plenty of oil, but that light remains on, that could indicate a clogged filter or failed oil pump.  You'll want to have a mechanic inspect the engine for potential damage if the oil was not flowing through it.
