Mitsubishi Repair: over heating and head gasget, cylinder head gasket, mitsubishi chariot

Question
Hello Anthony
I have a 1991 Mitsubishi Chariot MX gasoline 2.0l engine manual transmision. The car recently overheated and died. It now starts  but when i fill up the radiator water flows out at or near the belt pullies at the front of the engine, i can't quite see exactly where. Two questions: 1 - is it likely that this is a major and not worth the cost of repair? 2 - can I get the head off without removing the engine from the car?.

Answer
Doug,
It sounds like you warped our cylinder head gasket or burned out the water pump itself.  If all you need is the water pump replaced, that relatively inexpensive.  If you find that the problem is the head gasket, that's a bit more labor intensive.  You can usually determine if the head gasket is warped by doing a simple compression test.  You should be able to remove the head without removing the engine itself.
Good luck!
