Question
hello, just a quick concern for my son. he drives a mitsubishi eclipse gt 2002. recently, upon starting engine it produces high squeal. sprayed some wd40 it died down etc.. that was saturday, today as he was driving and as he turned the blower on,to the activated ac/heat, it began to squeal louder, but not until the blower or fan was maxed out. it wa accompanied by a strong burning belt type smell. i didnt notice an immediate lax in the belt, but im not much on mechanics sorry to say. you seem very qualified and intelligent on the subject. would you be so kind as to offer an opinion? thank you, sincerely... greg

Answer
Greg,
This problem is typical of a loose or worn belt.  Using WD40 or other belt conditioners may help briefly, but the problem will return and worsen unless fixed properly.  You have 3 main drive belts; alternator, power steering, and A/C compressor.  Over time, each belt will wear down and will need to be replaced.  If the alternator belt starts to go, the rest will soon follow.  Replacing the drive belts is relatively inexpensive and should be down every 45-60k miles.  I'd recommend having your local mechanic perform this job, as they can also make sure your alternator and all related components to the belts are also in working order.
Good luck!
