Mitsubishi Repair: 1998 eclipse rs white smoke, replacing head gasket, combustion chambers

Question
i have a 98 eclipse that i recently bought with a blown engine, i swapped it with a DOHC 2.0L and now that it is running there is tons of white smoke coming from my tailpipe, even when the car is idling. not only that but if i rev the rpm's up a liquid will shoot out like 2 feet. my check engine light is on and it reads error P1494 evap leak detection. there is a minor cut in my house for my emissions but i just want to know my problem with the smoke and liquid, is it because of the check engine light or my cylinder head?? i also just got a tune up, i am not losing any oil and it is a very nice oil change!

Answer
Mike,
My guess would be this is a head gasket issue.  The white smoke is most likely coolant that is leaking into your cylinder chamber.  If it has a sweet smell, and feels a bit slippery, it's definitely coolant. So when your engine is running, it does not take much coolant evaporating in your combustion chambers to create a lot of smoke.  And revving your engine is applying so much more coolant that it does not even have time to completely evaporate and that's why it's shooting out of your exhaust.  So you may want to pull the head and make sure the head gasket is seated properly, and perhaps it may just need to be retorqued.  Though replacing head gasket all together would be the best course of action.
Good luck!
