Mitsubishi Repair: lancer steering, outer tie rods, inner tie rod

Question
My son in-law has an 02 lancer. the driver's side inner and outer tie rods have seperated inside the boot. Now the steering wheel spins freely, without moving either wheel. I am not sure what has become disconnected on the passenger side. Can the rack and pinion assembly be saved? Is the inner tie rod broken on the passenger side? Or, is there anything I can do to make repairs? I am a fair mechanic with no experience with rack and pinion steering.
Thanks for any help.

Answer
Bruce,
Sorry for the late reply.  If the tie-rods broke while under a hard turn, then that could have damaged the rack&pinion. But the steering wheel will spin freely if the tie-rods on my sides of the car are damaged or broken.  The only way to truly tell is to get under the car and inspect the components.  Else, have the car towed to a mechanic to have it fully expected.
Good luck!
