Answer
Lucas,
When your car's engine is cold, your car's computer (ECU) tends to be bypassed and does not regulate ignition timing or certain sensors for air flow measurements.  After your engine reaches normal operating temperatures, air flow is closely monitored and ignition timing can get delayed if it detects knocking, lack of air flow, or lack of fuel.  All of which can make your engine perform poorly.  You may just need a good tune-up.  If you haven't had a regular tune-up in a while and if it's been 45-60k miles since you've had your timing belt replaced, you may want to think about doing that.  Ask your mechanic if they have any experience working on a VR4.  If not, you may want to consider having a dealership look at the car since the VR4 is more complicated than your average vehicle.
Good luck!
