Mitsubishi Repair: auto tranny trouble, cold engine, auto tranny

Question
got a 97 tsi awd, no reverse, if im under the hood and move the selector by hand theres not even a hint of engagement of reverse, however all other gears work as they should. theres no noise, no clunk no bang grind of anykind. would a faulty tcm (tranny control module) cause the valve body to not select reverse? i dont think its mechanical being that it was out of the blue that i couldn't get reverse and the lack of any noise. any thoughts?

Answer
Ben,
It's possible the TCU could cause this, but you'd want to have a mechanic inspect it to be sure.  Many times if your idle is too fast, your tranny will not let you shift into reverse to prevent damage.  If you've noticed your cold engine idle is faster than normal, this could be the cause.  If you cannot shift into reverse when the engine is cold, start the car and let it warm up complete then try to shift.  It may also be a good idea to have your transmission fluid flushed and the filter replaced if haven't done so in the past 60,000 miles.
Good luck!
