Mitsubishi Repair: 1997 Eclipse that sputters while shifting gears, shifting gears, vacuum leak

Question
Have you experienced this problem?  I just bought it used and it did not do this when I test drove it and when I got it home the check engine light came on and began sputtering.  I took it to autozone and they gave me the code for the check engine as P4022.  He looked at the gas cap and said it looked like it was in good shape.  I have not replaced the cap yet....do you know of a case where a bad gas cap results in sputtering?  I noticed the other things linked to this check engine code and wanted to try to narrow it down before I began to just replace parts.  The other causes include: Evap canister or hose cracked-not connected, Purge or vent solenoid defective, and vacuum leak at engine.  Please advise

Answer
Chris: Why not take it back to where you bought the car and get them to fix the problem with the car. You just bought it? I would replace the cap, looking at them you really can not see the very small problems with it. Also does sound like a vacuum leak, could be a hose or something on that order. Those are often hard to find, but why not do a tune up on the car first to see if that might help your problem. I would replace the Evap canister and then check the hose or hoses to that replace them. Also get the air filter changed, change the oil and filter too. Whenever I buy another car, I always do a oil change, replace the air filter and do a tune up on it. So I would start with those. God bless: Linda
