Mitsubishi Repair: Whistling Noise, air intake hose, eclipse gt

Question
Hi Anthony,
I found your response to Steve on 10/19/05 (quoted below), I am having the
exact same problem with my 2003 Spyder and was told by my mechanic that
the sound is most likely occurring because my transmission is going out
although I have no other symptoms to support that diagnosis. Is this an
accurate possible cause for the sound?  Thank you

Question
I have a 2000 Mits Eclipse gt automatic. I have noticed that a whistling noise
has been coming from my engine only when I take my foot off the gas pedal
(between 40 and 30 mph.) The noise goes away as soon as I put my foot on
the gas, or slow down below 30 mph.

Do you know what the problem is?

Answer
Steve,
The whistling may be due to a loose, leaking, or disconnected air intake hose.
You should also inspect and clean out your throttle body.  These are the most
common causes of whistling, but if could also be due to air simply finding it's
way under your hood while you're driving.  Make sure the hood is closing and
locking completely, and make sure there is nothing sticking between the
hood and the frame.
Good luck!

Answer
Judi,
This may not be something as sever as a spent transmission.  On a 5 year old vehicle, your tranny should not be ready to give out just yet.  I would recommend first have a transmission flush and fill with new fluid.  If it's an automatic, you should have the filter replaced as well.  I would recommend either having the dealership do this or a transmission shop.  They can also diagnosis if there is an actual problem with the tranny.  You average local mechanic may not be able to.
Good luck!
