Mitsubishi Repair: transmission, transmission shop, linkage

i have an 03 eclipse, 2.0, GS, manual,  my question is:  when the car is in neutral
the car acts like its in 1st gear and moves forward about 20 feet then dies out,  
and when the car is in reverse it begins to stop on its own and tries to move
forward and at times it is hard to bring the car out of 1st gear back to
neutral.....  why would these things happen?

This may be something as simple as having the shifter linkage adjusted.  It may be too tight (or loose) making the tranny thinking its actually in gear.  The best thing would be to have a transmission shop inspect the transmission to see if it's something simple or perhaps more complicated.
