Mitsubishi Repair: 1996 mit eclipse, mass airflow sensor, stepper motor

Question
my son bought a 1996 mits eclipse 2.0 non turbo. the guy he bought it from said it had a code for the egr valve. after driving it for a while it got bad, so i changed the egr valve. i also changed some emission hoses and pcv valve and sprayed some cleaner in the throttle body. the car runs like crap now, rough idle, sputtering, no pick up  even in 2nd gear floored goes no where. some 1 said i ruined the mass airflow sensor by spraying cleaner in the intake. so i ordered 1 from a junk yard. it does not seem to have 1 on this car. the 1 that came was still attached to the air cleaner box. his air cleaner box is different. so im not sure what exactly is wrong. any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
john

Answer
John,
Sorry for the late reply.  Spraying cleaner in the intake can cause problems to the ISC (idle speed controller).  This is a small stepper motor that maintain proper idle speed and bypasses measured amount of air. The cleaner may have gummed up this component that may account for the problems you're seeing.  The EGR valve should be cleaned off the car to be sure it's really clean.  The mass airflow sensor shouldn't have been affected by the cleaner, since it's located where the air filter is.The air cleaner box for the Eclipses varies based upon year and engine type.  If you have a non-turbo engine and the box that was sent to you was for a turbo engine or an Eclipse made before '95, then it will not match up.  You may want to remove all your intake components and clean them one at a time by hand.
Good luck!
