Mitsubishi Repair: Montero Sport 154,000 mile transmission issue, mitsubishi montero sport, mitsubishi montero

Question
I have a 1999 Mitsubishi Montero Sport with 154,000 miles. When I atart the vehicle and put it in drive, the gear seems to hesitate for a second then fall into place. I don't notice it any other time. I was wondering if you think this is a u-bolt going out, becasue itdoesn't make a loud rattling sound as it falls into place, or if you think the transmission is going out.

Answer
Jay: Is this Sport rear wheel drive? You need to have the computer coded to see what it might kick out to you as the problem. It could be you have a sensor that is getting weak, or the computer is not reading something as it should be. The computer controls everything in your vehicle, with the help of all kinds of sensors through out the engine and transmission. You could check the ujoints, by putting the vehicle up on jack stands, getting under it and trying to move the drive shift. If you can move it even a bit, the ujoints should be replaced. But if not, then they are fine. I don't think the hesitate has anything to do with the ujoints as the drive shaft. But more the transmission. But if you get the computer coded, it might print out what the problem is. It could be a cable getting weak in how the transmission shafts its self too. If you got an AutoZone close by they will code your vehicle for free. If that checks out ok, I would get those cables checked to see if one is getting weak, needs to be replaced or then get the fluid, filter replaced and put in some transmission conditioner in with the fluid change that should help too. You can get the transmission conditioner at any parts store, be sure to ask whoever does the transmission fluid and filter change to put that conditioner in. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
