Mitsubishi Repair: timing belt broke 02 mitz eclipse gt v6, hyundai dealership, timing belt

Question
QUESTION: The dealership is fixing the car (purchased it less than 30 days ago)I have been advised to replace water pump as well. Is there anything else you suggest to be done at this time? The car has 88k miles and the shop is putting a new motor in it. Thanks for your help!

ANSWER: Tammie: Are you sure they are replacing the engine or just rebuilding the one the car has in it now? When the timing belt goes when driving the car, you could have bent the valves so it is a great idea to replace the engine, and yes the water pump is good idea too. If they are putting in a different engine make sure they put in a new timing belt into that engine, new belts, all new fluid too. God bless: Linda

QUESTION: Linda: The Hyundai dealership, were I bought the car said that they were ordering a new motor from the Mitz dealership. How can I know it is a new motor? For all I know they could rebuild it, I wouldn't know the difference.
I will call and ask them to replace all my belts & fluids.
I appreciate your time and I am so thankful you are a girl who knows this kind of stuff.

ANSWER: Tammie: Hey good question on the new engine idea, I guess I had not thought about that. You could I guess ask to see the old engine but then how would you know if that came from your car. So I guess in this case you will have to trust the dealership. Still you should ask them if this is a new engine or a rebuilt one. If rebuilt make sure to ask about the timing belt in the engine as you want a new timing belt put in. I have had women get a rebuilt engine but the shop and that was a shop; not a dealership. But in a rebuilt engine  did not do much more than take one engine out and put in another. And things started to go out on the rebuilt. So ask if this is a rebuilt and if so how many miles the engine has on it. So you can write that down someplace and keep it will your car things. Then you will not have to guess on the miles but rather know. I mean you could have a 02 car but an engine from say a 1999 model car and that engine could have had 100,000 miles on it. In most cases a rebuilt is just as good as a new engine. But still being a woman you got rights but you need to ask questions because places seem to know that most women don't know a lot about things and so what you don't know won't hurt you, kind of idea. But don't let them put you off either, I mean it is your car and so you should know things. :o) So ask... God bless: Linda

QUESTION: Linda:The dealership has NOW informed me that they are replacing my motor('02 eclipse gt v6) with a motor from a salvage yard, it has 31k miles on it. They will provide a new timing belt & water pump with this motor. I will pay a $200.00 deductible, as my warranty states and I asked them to replace the other belts and fluids at my cost. What do you think?? Everyday this situation changes. Thanks for you help!

Answer
Tammie: Ah listen they never put new engines in anything anymore well something like this anyway. And I would say they thought you would not know the differents and so thought what the hell. Still the miles are low on this engine and so I would jump on that one. Remember to put down that miles on some paperwork someplace so you know how many miles the engine has on it. Because your car has more miles than that right? There are things that has the miles go by, so what you do is look at the miles on the car, then see where it is and then you should be able to understand where the engine will fit in. Then when things come up that should be done to the engine, you will have an idea when they should be done. I would get the dealership to sign a paper to the point that the engine has 31K on it too. But I am sure that engine will be fine. I do hope things work out for you and you get your car back in no time. God bless: Linda
