Mitsubishi Repair: Talon transmission issue, torque converter, neck of the woods

Question
QUESTION: I drive a 97 Eagle Talon with about 157,000 miles, FWD automatic trans. with overdrive. yesterday at a stop light I drove up to the red light and when it turned green, the car would not move. Had to push it to a nearby parking lot. It revs up when the gas is applied with no problem, but will not move an inch in any gear. Didnt notice anything out of the ordinary driving it that day. Also when the gear selector is moved, there is no "kicking" into selected gear that I noticed before the breakdown. I changed out the fluid and filter and still nothing. The linkage from the gear selector is not broken or loose. Heard this could be the torque converter or pump? Also, how much would a torque converter cost (average parts+install)

I now have trouble code P1784 -Manufacturer Contrl Transmission what does this mean?

thank you very much for any help!

ANSWER: Nick: First off you love to help you with an idea on cost, parts as well as labor. But what they charge in my neck of the woods would not be the same they charge wherever you live. You will have to get a phone, sit down and call some shops to see what they tell you. The computer in your car controls a lot of the shifting and other things with the transmission, the computer will often put the car into a thing called "safe mode", but in those cases you can still shift the car all the way up to 3rd gear. Could you tell me what color the fluid was that you took out of the car, was it pink and brown or all brown. If all brown did it smelled burnt. Did you check, and clean out the transmission pan to see if there was any steel pieces in it? I will have to look this code up and see what I can find out for you. I don't work a lot on transmissions but I can check around and then see what others will tell me. I will then write back. God bless: Linda

QUESTION: The fluid looked like it hadnt been changed in a while but it didnt look/smell too bad. I did clean the pan, and there were no metal parts in the pan. Just some gunk on the magnet but no sizeable pieces of anything.

Answer
Nick: I found out there was a recall on this transmission back in 1998. So I am thinking your problem is coming from that recall. But shoot it is to late for that recall now. I think about the only thing you can do now, is to rebuild the transmission you have now or put in a different transmission. The guys I talked to, said that auto transmission is all kind of clutches, sensors and all controled by the computer. But they though it odd that the computer did not throw the transmission into that "safety mode" as thought so you would know there was a problem in the system. So their thoughts is something has just let go in your transmission. One thought maybe you should have the car taken to a tranmission shop, that just does that kind of work. But still the car does have 158,000 miles on it, so we are back to you sitting down, using a phone and see what shops will charge for a rebuild or a replace. I know guys and their cars, they just love them and it does not matter the miles they have on them. I wish I could be more help to you, but like I said I don't work that much on transmissions other than to change the fluid and filter. God bless: Linda
