Mitsubishi Repair: 1998 timing error from crank and cam senors, engine seams, timing error

Question
I'm getting error codes from the crank and cam senors (both are new) that the timing is off. Engine seams to run fine and my mechanic says that if it wasn't right the car wouldn't run.  He is blaming in on my ecu, but there was nothing wrong with the ecu when I gave him the car to fix. So i guess my question is "err" can the timing be off like a 1/4 tooth and still run...And is this bad?

Answer
Steve: Yes, the car will still run and ok, too. But you need to get this checked. Have you ever had the timing belt replaced say around 60000 miles? I know some mechanic say 100,000 miles but I like to do them at 60000 miles. You need to find yourself a different mechanic, don't blame the computer it is only doing its job. Get that timing belt fixed well heck you get it taken off to fix the being off a tooth, just replace the belt with a new one. You know don't you if the timing belt breaks while going down the road, it will take the valves in the engine. Maybe your mechanic is hoping for more work, but then I don't know about that one either. Just get that belt checked please. And don't have more headaches down the road. Oh yes Steve being off a 1/4 is bad, very bad for your car. God bless: Linda
