i am looking to buy a used 1998 Mitsubishi montero sport, automatic, and i want to know if you have heard anything about the engine burning oil.

I don't know of anything specifically about Monteros being known for burning oil, but any neglected or mistreated engine can and will burn oil over time.  Regular oil changes and proper scheduled maintenance will decrease the chances of an older vehicle having engine issues.  Burning oil can be pretty serious and can cost thousands of dollars to repair.  If you detect any Montero (or other vehicle) you tend to purchase burns oil, steer clear and keep looking.  If you can find an owner that kept records of all the past maintenance, that should help give you some idea of how the car was treated and if it'll last for you.
