Mitsubishi Repair: 97 eclipse rs Auto trans prob, leak seal, time billy

Question
Dear Ms Linda,
97 RS eclipse stock 2.0
Ok ,I'll try to keep it brief.Trans is auto.Coded today had 3 codes.CODE(1) 3rd gear not synchronized Code(2) 4th gear not synced either.CODE(3)sumn about a sending unit, said dealer had to program new unit and advance-auto couldnt get it ,even called their home office..dealer only they said,,and had to be programmed to the car?...if thats what it even is.WHAT,I've read through the forums and the safe modes described seem to be related to one gear.My car has reverse, and shifts from 1st to 2nd ,but when it trys 3rd ,,its like its in nuetral(revs high) and jumps back into 2nd.Safe mode? Also I know there is a trans leak,@seal or pan(no prob)IF the tran got low on fluid could it have caused these codes?.Just bought the car.Could it be as simple as a filter a computer obd reset? An maybe a "sending unit" Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Answer
Mr Billy: You just got the car?? Oh dear, is most cases when the computer put a transmission into that safe mode, about the only thing to do is replace the transmission. I have not found a case where replacing all the sensors, reprograming the computer or anything like that works. Those transmissions are a lot of parts and all have to work together to shift the car. It would seem once the computer finds a problem in the system. It just never will let that go, most shops just replace the transmission. You might try a transmission shop and see what they might tell you. My shop is a very small shop, so we will tell the person with transmission problems to take the car to such a shop. Sometimes they can save the transmission but I have no idea how they do to do this. Have you checked the transmission fluid as to the color of it? Is it pink in color? Which would be very good. Pink with a bit of brown in it, not so good. Or all brown, not very good at all. If it is brown and smells burnt, then the clutches within the transmission have been cooked and can not be fixed. You could try to change the fluid and filter; then add a bit of transmission conditioner, parts stores sell this. Sometimes that will fix the problem or buy you enough time to trade the car off. It could be someone whoever owned the car before you did not take very good care of that transmission. They cooked it, those little cars run the transmission very hot and so you need to put in the right fluid for those transmissions. Most people buy whatever is cheapest, and really you need to buy a costly transmission fluid as it can handle the heat the car puts out. Still before you just listen to me, take the car to a transmission shop, as they might be able to help you better than I. I only know bits about these transmissions. God bless: Linda
