Mitsubishi Repair: oil light, oil light, car oil

Question
I am interesting in buying this 2000 eclipse 4 cylinder, 2.4 liter, manual. we took it for a test drive when we first started it up the oil light came on as the rpm's rose the light went off. Again when the car idled the light came back on. Could this be the oil pump? If not what can I look for to know if it is a serious problem or not

Answer
Ashley,
The problem may be as simple as a low oil level or the idle speed needs to be adjusted.  If the idle speed is around 800 RPMs when the engine is warm, but the oil light still comes on, then this is an oil pressure problem.  I would question the current owner (or dealership you're buying it from) to see if they have maintenance records for the car.  This includes any repairs, oil changes, new tires receipts, etc.  If the owner cannot produce these records, you may want to pass on buying this car.  Oil problems can be difficult to diagnose and very expensive if the problem is something serious, like a bad oil pump.
Good luck!
