Mitsubishi Repair: engine squeal, mitsubishi galant, ac compressor

Question
I have a 96 mitsubishi galant and the engine has a whine sound. when i turn the a/c on it affects it a little but my rpms drop 500 rpms. is it my a/c ? what needs replaced ?

Answer
Couple things.

1. check to see that the battery is goo
2. check the alternator.
3. If all good then check the belt to see if it needs to be replaced.
4. the sound your hearing could be worn belt, loose belt.
5. The pulley that the belt sits on the ac compressor is bad, or ac compressor could be ready to lock up.

As for you car loosing power that bad I would get a compression test. If the engine don't have enough compression it will lack power to the ac. You need to get this to a local mechanic
