Mitsubishi Repair: transmision problem, transmission c, transmission shop

Question
Hi Linda, thankyou with the previous help but unfortunately the fluids have been changed already and all that is good, and the problem persists. I have taken my car at a local transmission shop and they checked it for free, but the gave e some bad news, they say that the car has been running in 2nd gear because it is the SAFE MODE,I am not really sure about this but it made sense, the guy told me when the computer detects a problem in the trans. then it automatically shifts into 2nd gear for protection in order to not blow the trans. anyway he also told me that the transmission is clogged up? that, I do not have an idea what it is, he also said that the cost to fix it is 1,300$ that would be mostly labor, of course I said no, but he told me that there is a risk that the trans might go out. maybe he told me because he really wanted me to get it fixed by them, in the end i am not sure, oh another thing he said is that that there might be a loose cable or sensor.. so honestly I cannot see why they charge so much just for taking the thing  apart. So I come to you once again seeking advice and help, I am pretty familiar with cars and i am sure i can take it apart with no prob. but is there anything esle that i need to know? anything i should be aware of when taking it apart? where would you start if you where working on it? thanks once again.- Paul

Answer
Paul: That is why I wanted you to have the car coded as to see if the computer might tell you of which sensor might be out or causing the problem. I know about the SAFE MODE so the computer put the car there, why not code it to see what is causing the problems. I know my son had a car that the computer put in SAFE MODE. He took to a shop and they replaced the transmission. I asked what the coding told them, they said they never coded the car. Why not?! Because they wanted that $1000.00 in repair. The guy you talked to is right the tranmission will lock up with time. You could try to change the fluid, filter and add a transmission conditioner(buy a any parts store) which will buy you some time. But after a while it will come back the problem. You could try having the transmission flushed, as to get out all the old brown/pink fluid and again put in new. It might again buy you some time. Ok, now are you talking about taking the transmission apart? You need to check out sites on the net about those transmissions there is alot to them. It would be smarter in the long run to have the car coded, find out what sensor is bad replace that and then if that did not fix the problem because the transmission is damaged from running it like this; then to just replace it with another one. But first do the coding to see what the computer says the problem is. I don't remember what year car this is, well check at those parts stores as to the year of your car, some of them if new enough you can buy a meter and check it yourself. Other wise you will have to use a voltmeter and get a repair manual for your car to find out that readings you should be getting. But then you should have a repair manual for your car anyway, most parts stores have them for around $20.00 and well worth the money. You could try just typing in the year, make, model of your car and ask about sensors problems with transmission on the net to see what might come up. But you also need to check out those transmissions on the net too, they have sites that will explain them, how they work and sometimes will explain some of the sensors too. I do hope this helps you and God bless: Linda
