Mitsubishi Repair: 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse trouble, mitsubishi eclipse, black boxes

Question
Ok here's the dilemma. I have a 98 Eclipse. a few days ago it died on me. I was told that my starter was shot and me and a few friends replaced it. After replacing the starter we went on to jump-starting it. However the guy that put the cables on my car reversed the polarity when he attached the cables to my battery. I had to replace my battery. After going out and getting a new one we tried to start the car yet again. This time when the car tried to turn over it made a single click sound and a slight humming sound was heard. I have no idea what is wrong with it. I've checked all the connections, the alternator, the fuel pump, and the sparks. I have a feeling it is something electrical. But I can't figure this problem out. Do you have any idea what is wrong? If so could you point me in the right direction? It would be very much appreciated.

Answer
Thomas: Ok well my guess would be the single click sound would be the solenoid which is part of that new starter, so you will have to take that starter off and take it someplace to be tested. As you might fried the solenoid and so the starter. Then if the car still will not start you have take the alternator off and have it tested too. As you could have fried that also, or the voltage regulator which is part of the alternator. In some cases doing something like this, once you get the car started you find all kinds of other problems. Such as with the radio, the dash lights well anything to that was controled by that battery. But yet, you also have relays and large fuses in those black boxes within the same area as the engine. I would be getting a flashlight and checking them. Some car have three of those, some cars have two and others just one. Black boxes, one maybe on the driver's side of the car, one over by the battery and one maybe on the battery. One the top of each box is what relays and fuses are in each box. Also check the fuses inside the car, under the dash on the driver's side of the car. I am hoping that those relays and the fuses did their job and blew as to stop the power from running all over in the car. Did you have the alternator tested as by say AutoZone to make sure it is not fried inside? Or the new starter? Please when doing this again, be the one that hooks up those cables and check those cables good. Oh also if you find a relay that needs to be replaced, take the neg cable off the battery and then replace it after the new relay is in the box.  Things happen and I know your friend did not mean to do this.Ok, if after you do all this, you are still having problems, you will either have to put the car into a shop and let them find the problems. Or you could get yourself a repair manual most parts stores sell them for around $20.00 and a voltmeter; need the repair manual for the right readings; using the voltmeter to find where the problem is at. I hope this helps and God bless: Linda
