Mitsubishi Repair: backlight switch, light fuse, fuse box

Question
a week ago I noticed the backlights, the white which are supposed to lit when you go in reverse didn't lit anymore. I checked the bulbs and were ok. Insisted moving the speeds plank and sometimes they lit for a second. I presume the switch is loose or in bad shape. The problem is I don't know where the switch is located. Could you please help me?

Answer
Adrian: The backup light swtich is located on the top of the transaxle, near the right(passenger's side) right corner of the housing. But did you check the fuse? Check the 10A backup light fuse(fuse number 12) in the fuse box under the instrument panel on the driver's side of the car. If the fuse is ok, verify that there is voltage available on the battery side of the switch, with the ignition turned to On, of course. If there is no voltage on the battery side of the switch, check the wire between the fuse and switch; if there is voltage, put the shift lever in Reverse and see if there's voltage on the ground side of the swtich. If there is no voltage on the ground side of the switch, replace the switch, if there is voltage, note whether one one or both light bulbs are out. If only one bulb is out, replace it; if they're both out, it could be the bulbs but it's more likely that wire between the switch and the bulbs has an open somewhere. Oh you can use a voltmeter to get the readings for this. And you need to buy yourself a repair manual for your car, most parts stores have them and they cost around $20.00. I took this out of my manual but it is for older Eclipses. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
