Mitsubishi Repair: 91 Eclipse tranny saga, transmission control unit, electrical harness

Question
Hello Anthony. Going to try to keep this saga short. Bought a 91 Eclipse 2.0 litre from a friend.  Engine runs great. month after I bought it -tranny went out.  replaced at local tranny shop.  ended up taking it back three times for jerky shifts.  finally- their subbed out tranny builder swore the tranny was good, at which point they swapped out the transmission control unit.  Still not shifting right. I was told that 1st gen eclipse tranny computers "learn" shift points, but this shifts aren't subtle.  sometimes the tach revs way up before it shifts. I'm beyond fed up. I really don't want to dump more money into the car (paid 2K for the tranny already) but don't want to lose my investment if easy fix. The tranny builder (very honest and nice old guy) swears that the transmission itself is good - he's poured over it a hundred ways. Read past posts here and am starting to wonder if this might be the ECM capacitor issue popping up.  Would that make any sense ?  Anything else I should check ?  If I'm not a DIY-er, how could I find a good 1st gen Eclipse mechanic near Indianapolis ?

Answer
Scott,
It does sound like an electrical issue.  The ECU and the TCU can work together or independently.  But the problem you're describing isn't common for a failing ECU.  Though it's still a good idea to get it inspected.  There may be a problem with a bad speed sensor, tach sensor, or even a damaged tranny electrical harness.  If you feel the tranny shop you've been taking your car to has run out of ideas, the only other option I can think of would be to take your car to the dealership and explain to the service department all the work that had already been done.  You can ask for an estimate and see if their recommendation for a fix is in your price range.
Good luck!
