Mitsubishi Repair: 97 eclipse gs, merry christmas and a happy new year, eclipse gs

i have a 97 eclipse gs with the 420a 2.0L automatic. well it  looks and runs great ......it even drives great. BUT it doesnt have reverse.  it doesnt clunk or anything when you put it into reverse and you can rev it in reverse without it moving an inch. any ideas what this may be.  car has 174K on it........but looks like it has way under 100k

any help would be great....... this is a car we bought for our som who is now in bootcamp

Jeff: Sorry to say not such you can do, well your could change the fluid and filter to see if that helps. But other wise sounds like a broke band, you should check a site on line and it would explain to you how the automatic transmissions work. Other wise you could take the car to a transmission shop and see what they tell you. But you might have to get the transmission rebuilt as long as the car is looking good or you could buy another transmission to put into the car. I wish I had better news for you. Someone must have got pretty nasty to the transmission with the reverse and just broke that band. I had a car like that, when younger and I just lived with it. But I had a lot of friends that would help me roll it back, when I needed to back up. I am sure that is not really an answer for you either. I wish I had better news for you.
