Mitsubishi Repair: Mits mirage 97 w/ Fail OBD/P0505, trouble code, male friend

Question
Hi, A friend gave me her car, but I can't transfer title d/t failed inspection. The OBD result was:" monitor not ready" MIL Commanded on and there was also one trouble code reported: p0505. This car has 66K miles, runs well except has an idle surge/stall until it's well warmed up...the " check engine" light has ALWAYS been on in this car , as in for years..what kind of cost am I dealing w/ here in terms of getting it to pass inspection. I am a single parent/ can't afford to buy a car or spend much on repairs and only use car minimally ( ie. not on highways) how can I get it to pas the inspection ?
Thanks
Colleen

Answer
Colleen: Have you got an AutoZone in your area? They will code your car for free and would explain that is going on with it. You would then get a print out and could decide what needs to be replaced. It sounds like there is a bad sensor but that trip to AutoZone would explain which one. As for the check engine light, it is on because someone never reset the computer, or never replaced the sensor that the computer was picking up as a problem in the system. I wish I could tell you what all this might cost you. But I have no idea where you live and so don't know what things cost there. If you have a male friend he might be able to find a way for you to pass that inspection. But if you find out what sensor is out, you could find one at a junk yard and get that. They would not be so costly for you. Still if you get the car coded someplace, then you would know what is wrong with it and if you want to spend the money to get it fixed. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
