Mitsubishi Repair: the idle on my 99 mirage, stop screw, screw driver

Question
i have been trying to increase the idle on my 99 mirage. as i understand it, there is a small screw protruding from the right side of the idle gas control knob (im not sure what to call this, it is the thing that the wire from the gas peddle pulls when you press the gas) if i turn it counterclockwise the idle should increase a little, but i can not get a screw driver or anything else into that screw. it is in a hard to reach place with very little room to maneuver? any suggestions. or is there another way to increase the idle on my car? please help, i have been trying for 2 weeks to fix my low idle. and i don't want to have to pay a mechanic for something so minor?

Answer
I think you are messing with the idle stop screw, which should NOT be adjusted. You are looking for the base idle screw, which is a flat-tip screw mounted at the top of the throttle body. It usually has a small plug to protect it from novices adjusting it, as it shouldn't have to be changed. Keep in mind that the computer will compensate for any changes you make, so you make it idle faster, then it will lower it, up to the limit it can control it. After that it won't have proper control of your idle for decelleration and such. My advice would be to get some brake-clean and remove the air hose into your throttle-body and clean the throttle plates and the area around where the plates ride. Be sure to open the throttle and get on the top of the plates as well. As these get dirty, the idle will lower. It is your most likely problem.
