Mitsubishi Repair: 1992 Eagle Talon Limp Mode, mitsubishi eclipse, eagle talon

Question
"My girlfriend has a 1993 eagle Talon ES 2.0 non turbo. And since it's the same as a Mitsubishi Eclipse, I thought I'd ask your advice. About a month ago she was driving on the interstate and the transmission stopped working. She can't remember having any problems or hearing any noise before it stopped working. After removing the transmission, I found that the torque converter inner sprocket was "stripped". The shaft on the transmission showed no wear. So we replaced the torque converter. Replaced filter and flushed all fluid. Now vehicle is always stuck in limp mode. Shifts hard into reverse also but does drive both forward and reverse. Pulled TCM codes following the instructions on http://www.plymouthlaser.com/tcucodes.htm and got the following codes: 12, 83, 41, 47, 43. I already checked and re-adjusted the TPS sensor. It falls within normal ranges. All connections to transaxle are clean and connected tightly. Disconnected battery to "hopefully" reset codes. Does not appear to work.  Left battery unhooked for several hours. After reconnecting battery and before starting vehicle the same codes were still there as if never erased.  Any suggestions?? I was thinking maybe the TCU itself?? Can I erase the TCM codes and see if that works?? Or does it sound like a bad transmission?? Thanks for your help."

Answer
Ron,
You may have a faulty valve body solenoid unit.  I would recommend having a transmission shop inspect they unit and replace if necessary.  A bad TCU is also suspect, so that should be inspected as well.  The ECUs in the older Eclipses/Talons were prone to problems due to under-rated capacitors that would burn out.  If those same under-rated capacitors are in the TCU as well, then they may fail as well.  Have the transmission shop inspect that as well.
Good luck!
