Mitsubishi Repair: 1994 Mitsubishi Galant s ??transmission??, neutral safety switch, mitsubishi galant

Question
I have a 1994 galant s, sohc, automatic.  I started my car and drove half a block and stopped at the stop sign. Pressed the gas to go and the car made a "slight" clunk and jerked as though it slipped gear.  Stopped again checked to make sure I was in gear and then pressed the gas again, this time nothing.  I have park and neutral.  That's it.  It's never slipped before.  No warning signs.  Can't run code, bypassed neutral safety switch!

Answer
Jennifer: Did you check the transmission fluid? You have to have the car warmed up to do this and then check the fluid. It could the car just needs some fluid, the fluid should be pink in color. I would get the transmission fluid and filter changed. And add some  transmission conditioner to it. And see if that helps your problem. You will have to get the car into a tranmission shop, but do the fluid, filter and conditioner first. Because they start talking rebuilt transmission or replacing the transmission. Some shops just will hardly want to do the less costly things first. But still you can start the car up, get it up to temp, in that the engine is warmed up, leave it running and check that transmission fluid. Again as I said it should be pink in color, if it is brown or a mix of pink and brown then it needs changing. To check the transmission fluid, you look on the back of the engine or find the transmission then find the place to pull the stick to check that fluid. A transmission is only as good as its fluid and filter. Please keep me posted on this too. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
