Mitsubishi Repair: 99 Mitsubish Eclipse - squeal noise, mitsubish eclipse, alternator belt

Question
I have a 99 Mitsubish Eclipse. When starting my car it a loud squeal comes from under the engine hood.   The noise dies down when I start driving.  This just started yesterday out of the blue?

I have 78,000 miles and have had all minor and major maintenance done according to owners manual.

Any idea what this may be before i take it to the dealer.
Thank you

Answer
Sounds like one of your belts are squealing. If it happens when the a/c if off, then it's either the Power steering belt or the Alternator belt. The alternator belt is especially common if you have a bad battery or low battery as the alternator is working extremely hard upon start-up and takes more energy to turn, thus more likely to slip. The P/S belt is less likely to do it at all for more than a moment unless you are turning the steering wheel, which should make it worse.  My money is on the Alternator belt being loose. If it's in good condition, then it just needs tightening.
