Mitsubishi Repair: 99 Eclipse Gs-t 100k miles, wastegate actuator, car parts stores

Question
I have owned my 99' gs-t for several years and it has run like a champ until recently.  Whenever my turbo is about to reach full boost it hesitates and shudders a little.  Because of this the power band feels quite gutless.  I was thinking the turbo might be dying due to a slight burning smell from under the hood after a run.  Any suggestions would help.

Answer
Derek: I would say that turbo is a precision component which can be severely damaged by an interrupted oil or coolant supply or loose or damaged ducts. But due to the special techniques and equipment requited, checking and diagnosis of suspected problems dealing with the turbocharger should be left to the dealer or a shop. But you could check the the connections and linkages for security, damage and other obvious problems. Also you could check the components that govern the turbocharger such as the wastergate solenoid, bypass valve and wastegate actuator. Each turbocharger has its own distinctive sound, a change in the noise level can be a sign of potential problems. A high-pitched or whistling sound is a sign of a inlet air or exhaust gas leak. The burn smell coming from your's might be due to a leak in the oil inlet lines. You best be checking this out. You should go out and buy yourself a repair manual for your car, parts stores have these manual for around $20.00 and well worth the money. This manual will walk you through how to check those lines for leaks and other things to be checking as well as how to do it. I hope this helps and God bless: Linda
