Mitsubishi Repair: 3000gt sl battery being drained., power surges, little cars

Question
I have the same problem with my 98 3000gt sl as someone else it seems from a month back. My battery is beingg drained if my car sits for 3 to 4 days. I have went outside without my keys and my windows will still go up and down sometimes and sometimes not. I also hear and see lights on the window buttons blink on and off at a fast pace. Could it be in the relay that you were talking about ?   Thank you for your help.  Don.

Answer
Don: Sounds like to me that the voltage regulator might be bad in your car. The purpose of it is to prevent power surges, circuit overloads, etc, during peak voltage outputs. That voltage regulator is part of the alternator. I would also check the belts that run that alternator to make sure they are in good working order, replace them if needed and make sure the alternator is hooked down tight too. Also check the cables on the battery, these little cars like tight cables and clean ones too. Also check and make sure nothing in the way of wires have broken or come loose on the alternator. If nothing of these ideas help your problem. You can get yourself a repair manual for your car at a parts store for around $20.00 as you will need this to know what kind of readings you should be getting. And voltmeter, then starting with the battery you will find the problem for this. It could be a weak relay, those are in the black box either one or two of them under the hood with the engine. On the top of the box will explain what relay is in the box. If you do replace a relay, before you do, remove the neg cable from the battery and then replace it once you have replaced the new relay. But to me those lights blinking at a fast pace sounds like a surge, so that would be caused by a short or the need to replace that alternator. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
