Mitsubishi Repair: 93 Mitusbishi Eclipse ICU motor, mitusbishi eclipse, haynes manual

Question
Hi Linda,
I have a 93 Eclipse 1.8L 145k  I get 5 error codes.  I've checked the components with the errors according to the Haynes manual and they appear to be in spec.  I do not have any power to the ICU motor.  The manual specified 12v for one connector and 'some voltage' for the other.  I do have power to the ICU position sensor.  I live in the midwest with extreme temp. changes.  Does the signal for the ICU motor come from the ECU?  I hate to dump money into a new/rebuilt ECU if mine is ok.  I took my ECU out and the capacitors appeared ok although there was a little bit of black gook around two other small pcb board components.  Sorry to be so long winded.  Please edit my question for size if you need to.  Thanks for looking into this.

Answer
Greg: Got to say you have the right year for the bad computers, I would say your black gook is just the ticket, Mitsubishi farmed out the building of their computers to another company and that company did not build very good ones. A part will start to leak into the computer, so your black gook and it will with time kill off that computer. It is far better in my book to be long winded, because then I can understand things a bit better. I would have the computer checked, as it sounds like the computer is bad. The computer in your car controls everything, from the amount of fuel the engine gets to the way the transmission shifts if an auto. I know about those extreme temp changes but in this case if your computer is bad, it is most likely one of those built by that company. So get that computer checked. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
