Mitsubishi Repair: Tail Lights/Turn Signal Problems, left turn signal, emergency flashers

Question
I have a 2001 Montero XLS, and am having a weird problem with the left side front and rear lights (headlights work fine).  When I turn on the lights, none of the left side lights illuminate, while the front and rear right side tail and marker lights correctly illuminate.  When I turn on the left turn signal, all of the front and rear left side lights flash (tail, marker, and turn).

I should add that the brake lights work correctly on both sides.  Also, when the flashers or left turn signal are turned on, after about ten seconds, the left turn signal fuse and emergency flashers fuse blow.  Once blown, I have no turn signals, left or right.

I would appreciate any help.

Answer
Drew: Your problem sounds like a weak or bad relay. When you open the hood of your car, standing looking at the engine. There should be two or three small black boxes in with the engine. One up by the firewall driver's side, either one or two over by the battery area. Or on the other side of the engine. In those boxes are relays and larger fuses. As relays or fuses control the lights in the car. On the tops of those boxes should be what is in each box. When you check on of the relays, always use a flashlight to shine into the relay as they are hard to see if bad. If you find one that is bad, remove the neg cable off the battery, put in the new relay and then replace the neg cable. Other wise you will burn out the new relay and have to do it all over again. The fact that flashes or left turn signal when turned on after a bit, fuses blow. To me, should that a relay is bad so letting to much power through the wires and so the fuses blow to save the wiring. I hope this helps and God bless: Linda
