Mitsubishi Repair: transmission, transmission shop, highway speed

Question
I have a 2002 lancer. While driving at highway speed the car will slip into 3rd gear and will not shift up or down, unless car is turned off and on again. It is an automatic. It also seems not to go into overdrive anymore. At 65-70 mph the rpms are at 3000 and change. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Roger: There is a problem in your transmission that the computer is picking up, so it will put your car into 3rd gear and will not let it shift up or down. I would try changing the fluid, filter and put in an transmission conitioner into the transmission. But you should take the car to a transmission shop, as there could be a problem with a sensor or the computer. As the car should be coded that would rule out any problems with the sensors or computer. So either try changing the fluid, filter then add that conditioner to see if that helps at all. What color is the fluid in the transmission? Pink, pink with a bit of brown color in it or more brown than pink? Does it smell burnt? If all pink then that is good, pink with a bit of brown not to much worry but more brown or all brown; that would not be good. But if you have someone change the fluid such as a transmission shop, then explain to them what it is doing. Do some things to the transmission before you just put in another one. I have had people write me, had troubles with their transmission went out and put in another one with the same troubles because it was the computer of their car or a bad sensor. I hope this gives you some ideas on what to check. God bless: Linda
