Mitsubishi Repair: torque converter, chrysler dealer, torque converter

Question
I have a 90 eclipse 1.8 auto.  I was driving on the interstate when all of a sudden it shifted down a gear and then shifted back up.  It did this 2-3 times and then stayed in 2nd until you would shut the car off and wait a while.  It continued this problem, so I took it to the chrysler dealer, no mitsu dealer close, and they have had it about a month and a half.  They said that it is not electrical and have narrowed it down to the torque converter.  He said it shuttered.  The quote was about $1600 for new converter and install.  He said there is no reman converter available.  Does this sound like a converter problem?  Should I try to change the fluid and filter first?  If so is it necessary to use mitsu fluid?  What about an additive?  Any info helps.  Thanks

Answer
Landon: Ouch! Look why not try the fluid, filter and put a reconditioner in the transmission. But also have the car coded, this sounds more like a problem with the computer and a sensor to me. You know don't you that the computer controls the shifting of your car's transmission. Really now $1600.00, heck I think I would have the transmission rebuild first. Had a son that ended up putting in all kinds of parts to save his transmission. Wouldn't listen to mom, in the end he just replaced the transmission. You might have to do that, no you don't have to use Mitsubishi fluids, but get a high grade of it. Listen while I am thinking about this, did you check the fluid? Is it any other color than pink? Is it brown, or a mix of brown, pink or does it smell burnt? I really have to knock this dealership you took your car to, as I am not sure they really know what is wrong with the car. Oh hey, if you spend that kind of the money with this place, will they stand behind their work? In that if this does not fix it, they will make sure to get it to working right? Give you say 3000 miles or 3 months on their work? I mean that is a lot of money. Ok, well do try the fluid, filter and conditioner. But listen no promise that will fix your problem. But before I spent $1600.00 I would be checking in to all kinds of things. Also you need to get a second shop to check your car over and see what they tell you. You know like when you see a doctor and he says you need this costly surgery. Would you not go to a second doctor to see what he might say. Well I would do this too, maybe try a transmission shop. These automatic transmissions are really hard to understand, there are all kinds of sites on the net where you can read up on them. So you should check out one of those sites. I am sorry but I don't have a lot of faith in these dealership garages, they work on so many different things. Have schooling but it is for all kinds of things. A transmission shop works only on transmissions and should know a lot more. It might come down to the fact that you will have to either rebuild or replace the transmission. But I am getting ahead of myself there. So maybe take your car to a transmission shop, have them change the fluid, filter and be sure to put in a conditioner(don't let the shop talk you out of this) and then explain to them what the car is doing. And see what they think is wrong. I do hope this helps and good luck! Linda
