Mitsubishi Repair: 97 Talon ESI Missing Gears, talon esi, clutch disc

Question
Hi Linda. I own a 1997 Eagle Talon, ESI, manual transmission, and about 5000 miles on a new engine. I was out yesterday, and I went to shift, and my second gear wasn't there. I can shift into where second -used- to be without being on the clutch. Same with fourth gear, and reverse. I can easily get into first, third, and fifth gear, but the gears on the bottom seem to be lost. Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Thank you!

Answer
Shawn: Could be whoever hooked the new engine up to the transmission did not do it right and so now things are messing up on the transmission. This is what my repair manual says about not being able to select gears... faulty transaxle(that could happen if they did not hook the new engine up right to it), faulty clutch disc, release lever and bearing not assembled properly, faulty pressure plate and pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts loose. You need to take the car back to who ever put in the new engine and get them to check their work. If the transmission worked just fine before the new engine, I would be starting there as to what is going on with the transmission now. I hope this helps and good luck! Linda
