Mitsubishi Repair: Ignition fuse???, internal engine components, stereo amps

Question
Hi,
I have a 99 eclipse with 5,000 miles on the engine and 63,000 on the body. I recently had a fuel pump replaced the man who fixed it wired it directly to the battery for whatever reason? I drove the car for a few weeks and then all of a sudden it just shut off. Everytime I turn the key the ignition fuse blows. I have unhooked the fuel pump and tried turning the key the ignition fuse still blows. So I dont really no where to start with this? A few people have said that there is a dead short any info would defintly be appreciated.
Thanks
Jessica

Answer
Jessica,
Your mechanic may have rewired the fuel pump directly to the battery as a way to get a better power connection to the pump.  On Eclipses, the power to the fuel pump has been known to get weak if the car has other high-consumption power requirements like stereo amps and the like. It can drain too much power from the pump.  Why your mechanic did it for you is a mystery to me.

If the car's computer detects a lack of fuel to the engine due to a weak signal at the fuel pump, then it automatically blows the ignition fuse and will continue to do so until the problem is resolved.  This is good because it prevents detention from happening, which would destroy internal engine components.  Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing how your mechanic rewired the fuel pump, so I would be of little help.  But I would think he would be able to put it back to normal, and I recommend you call your mechanic and have the car towed back to his garage at his expense to fix the problem.
Good luck!
