Mitsubishi Repair: Electrical, I think, hook ups, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
I have a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse. I recently was driving it and the alternator belt blew so i drove home on the battery. When I replaced the belt it still didn't work so I replaced the alternator and the alternator fuse link. It ran for a short time then the fusible link blew again. It will start and run for very short periods of time before cutting out and then won't run again for a couple minutes. I think there may be a short somewhere but I am unsure. Do u have any advise for what it might be or what I can check?

Answer
Jessica:You say that the belt blew well broke while driving home and so you just drove home using the battery. But you forget about what else that belt also drove. You need to have those parts checked too. I am thinking one part might be the water pump. If you drove the car home, with no water moving through the engine. You could have cooked the head gasket on your car's engine. But without the engine running to long it would be hard to check. You really need to get the car into a shop and let them check it over. You could try to take the distributor loose and turn it either left or right to see if the car will start. That is if your car has a distributor as some of the newer cars do not have those anymore. But either way, driving a car when something breaks in the way of a belt is not alway a good idea. But I know sometimes it is the only way to go. So I would be checking the other parts that this  alternator belt also drove. And then I would also check the hook ups on that alternator something they are not hooked up tight enough. And check your battery cables too. Hope this helps and good luck! Linda
