Mitsubishi Repair: Reverse has gone out, clutch disc, disc release

Question
The reverse in my '98 Mit  Eclipse has gone out and I have no clue what happened. There was no big bang more like a snap when it happened. Any ideas how to investigate.

Thanks,
Steve

Answer
Steve: What is your car an automatic or a clutch? If a clutch it could be a worn or damaged revese ideler gear or idler bushing. Have you checked the fluid in the resevoir to see if you have enough in it? As that you could have a leak in the system. From my repair manual... faulty transaxle, faulty clutch disc, release lever and bearing not assmbled properly, faulty pressure plate and or pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts loose. Now if this is an auto... then check the fluid does it smell bunt or very brown or black in color? I would then change the fluid and filter to see if this would help. Also during the change put in an conitioner(can buy this at any parts store). They work wonders for reconitioning the transmission. Other wise you will have to take your car into a shop or transmission shop to see what the problem might be. Hope this helps and good luck! Linda
