Mitsubishi Repair: 1991 Eagle Talon TSi gears grinding, eagle talon tsi, 1991 eagle talon tsi

Question
I recently purchased a 91 eagle talon tsi with an automatic tranny.  Before buying the car I had a mechanic look at it and could not find any major problems.  The other day I was driving around town and I accidentally pressed my overdrive button, which is easy to do as it is located on the center console shifting knob.  Once the overdrive was enabled it seemed to slip into neutral and the engine started to rev upwards of 5k rpm.  So, I figured out it was the overdrive, which worried me about my tranny.  Then, earlier today I was leaving my apt complex at around 10mph when I heard a loud grinding noise and my car suddenly shut off.  So, I put it in neutral and pushed it back to my parking spot.  Later on in the day I started the car, and it started fine.  I drove the car around to another parking spot with ease and without any grinding.  What would cause this problem? Has my transmission  gone bad? Or could it just need new transmission fluid?

Answer
Gabriel: I always say if the transmission is shifting then the transmission is ok. Just something is not working right. I would have the fluid and filter changed to see how that might help the car. Also put a conditioner into that change too. You can buy this conditioner at a parts store, check the bottle and read up on which ever conditioner you buy. Have you checked the fluid, as to the color of it? It should be pink/pinkes red in color. Does the fluid smell burnt? You could have a sensor that is weak, there is all kinds of sensors that run things on that transmission. But right now do the fluid, filter and conditioner to see if that fixes the problem. Hope this helps and good luck! Keep me posted... Linda
