Mitsubishi Repair: mirage 1.5 runs but stops, bad computer, distributer

Question
I have a 93 mirage with a 1.5 when i got the car it would run for about 20 mins and then stop. I tried a new ecu and had the same problem. I replaced the distributer and it ran great BUT now since replacing the distributer i have put about 200 miles on it and while driving down the interstate it stalled out like the fuel pump quit working but would come back as long as you kept accelerating if you let off the gas it wanted to die. I hear a clicking noise in the dash just before i lose power. I put the other ecu i have in it and have the same problem with it as i do with the original ecu. So could my fuel pump be bad or a relay? or are both ecu's bad?

Answer
Dale: Are these computers you are putting into the car, are they for the engine size and model of car? Not some you bought at a junk yard right? You have to be running the right computer with the engine it goes together with. I hate to think both your computers are bad, but if they are used they could be. Mitsubishi farmed out the building of their computers to another company. That company did not make very good ones, in that a part will start to leak into the computer and with time it will kill off the computer. The stalling is one of the signs of a bad computer, that noise you hear in the dash is also the computer sound. But yet if the computers you are getting are new, then I would check out the relays for your fuel pump. Also check the fuel filter, it might need replacing too. In the distributer is another sensor, so this could be a bad sensor someplace too. Have you ever had the car coded? It would show any problems with the computer or any sensors. You can have the fuel pump tested to see if it is putting out enough fuel for your car to run too.Are you one of these people that run their cars tank down to empty before filling it up. And hey with this high cost of fuel, who isn't. But did you know the fuel is what keeps the fuel pump cool. You should only run the tank down to 1/4 empty. I would have the car coded, get the fuel pump checked to make sure it is putting out enough fuel and go from there. But you know the car is only as good as its computer. The computer takes its readings from all the sensors all over your engine and then sets up how the car will run. If one sensor is weak or not working, it throws the whole thing off. Or if the computer is not the right computer for the engine you have in your car, when the sensors in your car's engine would not send the computer the right readings. And throw the whole thing off. I hope this helps and good luck! Linda
