Mitsubishi Repair: Peculiar Idle problem, vacuum leak, bad traffic

Question
I have a std 2005 lancer ES.  I've noticed that the Idle speed goes way up either when it's hot and humid out, or if i'm stuck in traffic for a good ammount of time.  Today I was stuck in bad traffic and I would idle between 3000-3500 rpms.  I didn't have to rev the engine to get into 1st, or switch to 2nd, 3rd, or fourth, that's how high the idle speed was.  What's also wierd, if I put the air on, cold or hot (but didn't try A/C), and set it to blow on the windshield, the rpms dropped about 500, not sure what that means.  Also, if I switched from blowing on the windshield, to coming at my feet or something, the rpms went back up immediately.  When I finally got out of traffic, and was able to go more then 20 feet without stopping the idle dropped back down to around 500.  I did floor it in 5th gear when i was finally out of traffic, maybe that had something to do with it?

Answer
Mark: Again right out of my repair manual, well sorry but I have been getting so many nasty remarks back from people and if I answer the question it comes from my repair manual. So with that thought, my manual says that sounds like a vacuum leak, leaking EGR valve, when is the last time you did a good tune up? Check your air filter it might need changing. A lot of people these days are running their cars down to empty before putting in more fuel. You know don't you that the fuel pump is cooled by the gas in your tank. So if you do that enough, you will cook your fuel pump. I know your car is not that old, but there is an easy test to make sure you fuel pump is putting out enough fuel. But I would start with the vacuum leak, that is what that sounds like to me. Those kind of leaks are hard to find, so you will need to take your car to a shop to have them find that for you. You could get them to check the car too, maybe do that tune up, check the air filter as well as that EGR valve too. You talk about when you put on the air, onto the windshield that does sound like that vacuum leak again. I do hope this helps and good luck! Linda
