Mitsubishi Repair: manual transmission, clutch plate, hydraulic clutch

Question
On my 1996 manual 5 speed transmission, the clutch fully engages when the pedal is let out only about 1 1/2 inch.  It works, and doesn't slip, but it should come out farther before being fully engaged. I would expect a stretched cable to come out all the way, or even to slip when out all the way.  But this is the opposite, like it was too tight.  What could be wrong?  Thanks.

Answer
Dave: Your clutch is a hydraulic clutch, so I would check the fluid in the reservoir to see if it is at the right level. You didn't just get the clutch worked on did you? As my manual says it takes time for the clutch plate to seat its self. If the fluid in the reservoir raises as the clutch is depressed, master cylinder center valve seal is faulty. You would need someone to depressed the clutch so you can watch the fluid. You did not say if there is noise when you do this, or if the engine speed increases. Here is a few things my repair manual says you can check... pedal mechanism binding, pressure plate faulty and incorrect size master or release cylinder. I hope this helps and good luck! Linda
