Mitsubishi Repair: 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT, mitsubishi eclipse, cabin filter

Question
Hi.  I have the above mentioned car.  I left the country in December of 2004 and left my car to my mom to take care of.  Unfortunately when I returned in Jan of 2007, whenever the air is turned on, (heating or cooling) there is a STRONG moldy smell.  I've been told that I don't have a cabin filter in my car, so now what???

Answer
Tia,
Sometimes excess water can accumulate around the evaporator.  And if there is any debris around the evaporator, the moisture will cause it to decay, hence the moldy smell.  You'll want a mechanic to make sure the evaporator drain hose is clear and is properly draining the water.  Once that is set, you'll want to run the A/C constantly, run the blower and air out the cabin until the smell is gone.  If that smell does not get any better, you'll want to have the evaporator and heater core removed and thoroughly cleaned.  That procedure is pretty labor intensive, so hopefully letting the car air out will work.
Good luck!
